January 10, 2012 Harmed Animals Mankind has probably been possibly being the most demolishing act to ever hit mother nature. We as people have been the reason of this major problem. If it is by over hunting or rapid population growth, driving a endangered animal to extinction is nothing to be proud of and it’s definitley not slowing down. We have lost many great animals in our time and many more animals are on the edge. ("10 Recently Extinct Animals.")
Did you know more than 30 kinds of birds were dangered in the oil spill? Studies around the world have proven these facts, These include marsh birds, ocean-dwelling birds and migratory songbirds. All lie in "Important Bird Areas." (Gerstein) 25 million number of birds that traverse the GulfCoast per day, and which are potentially at risk from the oil spill. According to the LA Times Greenspace Blog, "Late spring is the peak time for neo-tropical songbirds moving from the YucatanPeninsula to make their first landfall in Louisiana," and "more than 70% of the country's waterfowl frequent the gulf's waters." Since 1500, more than 800 animals and plants have gone extinct. This is only counting the plants and animals that we seen of. Just a couple of the hundreds of animals on the endangered animals list are: African and Asian elephants, West Indian manatees, American alligators, Western gorillas, grizzly bears, Florida cougars, jaguars, tigers, black rhinos, California condors, humpback whales, sperm whales, green sea turtles, Atlantic salmon, and red wolves. Animals at risk of extinction are protected by the Endangered Species Act which states that when a species is endangered, it is illegal to kill, harm, or take the species out of its habitat. ("DoSomething.org")
According to scientists, more than 1.5 million species exist on the earth today. However, recent studies state that at least 20x that many animals youst to exist the planet. In the United States, 735 species of plants and 496 species of animals are listed as threatened or endangered. 266 of these listed species have recovery plans currently under development. There are more than 3,500 protected areas in existence worldwide. These areas include parks, wildlife refuges and other reserves. They cover a total of nearly 2 million square miles, or 3% of our total land area. Water species, which are often overlooked, are facing serious trouble. 1/3 of the United States fish species, 2/3 of its crayfish species, and almost 3-quarters of its mussel animals are in danger. Saving wildlife is at the core of WWF’s mission. Why? Because animal populations are disappearing at an alarming rates. But even in the face of threats like poaching, habitat loss and overuse of natural resources, WWF is creating a better future for wildlife every day. ("WWF") Protecting these animals also gives to a thriving, healthy planet for people’s health. From forests that slow climate change and spread water to oceans that provide more than 1/6 of the world’s food. Saving our animals on our planet is very important to our nature, if we don’t make a change now they could be gone for good!
