    Harmed Animals
Mankind has the honor of quite possibly being the most destructive force to ever hit mother nature. We as humans have been the cause of this major issue. Whether by over hunting or over population, driving a species to extinction is nothing to be proud of and it’s certainly not slowing down. We have lost many great species in our era and many more animals are on the edge. ("10 Recently Extinct Animals.")

Didu know at least 30 species of birds were harmed in the oil spill? Species of birds the Audubon Society says are potentially threatened by the oil spill. These include marsh birds, ocean-dwelling birds and migratory songbirds. All reside in "Important Bird Areas," according to Audubon, designated because of their "essential habitat value." (Gerstein) 25 million number of birds that traverse the GulfCoast per day, and which are potentially at risk from the oil spill. According to the LA Times Greenspace Blog, "Late spring is the peak time for neo-tropical songbirds moving from the YucatanPeninsula to make their first landfall in Louisiana," and "more than 70% of the country's waterfowl frequent the gulf's waters."
Since 1500, more than 800 species of plants and animals have gone extinct. This is only counting the plants and animals that we know of. Just a few of the hundreds of animals on the endangered species list are: African and Asian elephants, West Indian manatees, American alligators, Western gorillas, grizzly bears, Florida cougars, jaguars, tigers, black rhinos, California condors, humpback whales, sperm whales, green sea turtles, Atlantic salmon, and red wolves. Animals at risk of extinction are protected by the Endangered Species Act which states that when a species is endangered, it is illegal to kill, harm, or take the species out of its habitat. ("DoSomething.org")

According to scientists, more than one and one-half million species exist on the earth today. However, recent estimates state that at least 20 times that many species inhabit the planet. In theUnited States, 735 species of plants and 496 species of animals are listed as threatened or endangered. 266 of these listed species have recovery plans currently under development. There are more than 3,500 protected areas in existence worldwide. These areas include parks, wildlife refuges and other reserves. They cover a total of nearly 2 million square miles, or 3% of our total land area. Aquatic species, which are often overlooked, are facing serious trouble. One third of theUnited States’ fish species, two-thirds of its crayfish species, and almost three-quarters of its mussel species are in trouble. ("EndangeredSpecies.com")
Saving wildlife is at the core of WWF’s mission. Why? Because animal populations are disappearing at an alarming rates. But even in the face of threats like poaching, habitat loss and overuse of natural resources, WWF is creating a better future for wildlife every day. ("WWF") Protecting these species also contributes to a thriving, healthy planet for people’s health and well-being—from forests that slow climate change and filter water to oceans that provide more than 1/6 of the world’s food. Saving our animals on our planet is very important to our nature, if we don’t make a change now they could be gone for good!
